Anthony, Piers, - Book

23/10/2019 Note: Best Novel of the Year, British Fantasy Society Discover the magical beginning of Piers Anthony’s enthralling Xanth series Xanth was the enchanted land where magic ruled—where every citizen had a special spell only he could cast. It was a land of centaurs and dragons and basilisks. For Bink of North Village, however, Xanth was no fairy tale. He alone had no magic. And unless he got some—and got some fast!—he would be exiled. Forever. But the Good Magician Humfrey was convinced that Bink did indeed have magic. In fact, both Beauregard the genie and the magic wall chart insisted that Bink had magic. Magic as powerful as any possessed by the King or by Good Magician Humfrey—or even by the Evil Magician Trent. Be that as it may, no one could fathom the nature of Bink’s very special magic. Bink was in despair. This was even worse than having no magic at all . . . and he would still be exiled! Suggested for: Northam Managed by: Colbourne , Kim Status: Available in the library

Cudi, Azad, - Book

25/10/2019 Note: Azad is a 34-year-old British national from a Kurdish background. Based in London and Brussels, Azad grew up in Iran, where he was conscripted into the army and escaped to the UK. Aged 19, he was granted asylum and citizenship, learnt English and began working as a journalist for the Kurdish diaspora media. In 2011, Azad was working for a television station in Stockholm when the Syrian civil war broke out and the Kurds established their autonomous enclave. Azad's response was to fly out to Syria and work as a social worker, but as the civil war expanded he became a fighter in the volunteer army, the YPG, our allies in the 62 country anti-ISIS coalition. Kaplan, Gislea, - Book

27/11/2019 Note: The tawny frogmouth is one of Australia's most intriguing and endearing birds. Written by award-winning author Gisela Kaplan, one of Australia's leading authorities on animal behavior and native birds, this second edition of Tawny Frogmouth presents an easy-to-read account of these unique nocturnal birds, which can be found across almost the entire continent. Fully revised and updated throughout, this book combines 20 years of systematic observation with published research and information from regional surveys, and represents the most comprehensive single study ever conducted on tawny frogmouths. We learn that tawny frogmouths are very affectionate, have close bonds with lifelong partners, scream like prowling tomcats when distressed, fight with lightning speed and defend nest sites from reptilian predators by mobbing and spraying pungent feces at them. Uncompromising male fights are contrasted with the touching gentleness of males as fathers. We also learn how resilient and unusual tawny frogmouths are in the way they cope with heat and cold and scarcity of water, sit out danger, and use a large variety of food items. This fascinating book has a wide appeal to bird lovers, amateur ornithologists and naturalists, as well as those with a scientific or professional interest in native birds, their communication, emotions and skills. As well as delightful fruity jams like spiced apple & bramble, raspberry & rhubarb and High Dumpsy Dearie jam (a mixture of apples, pears, plums, ginger and lemon), there are tangy jellies such as rowan & apple or elderflower & spiced red wine, and curds such as gooseberry or St Clement's. Christofferson, Britt-Marie, - Book

17/01/2020 Note: Release date April 2020 Learn how to enhance and embellish knitted garments with beautiful embroidery stitches using just a needle and wool. Prepare to be amazed by textile artist and pattern designer Britt-Marie Christoffersson’s fantastic work and learn how to use embroidery to give knitted garments a new lease of life. Using simple stitches such as running stitch, couching, blanket stitches and rya knots, Britt-Marie creates a wide variety of patterns that will inspire you to even more creativity. Embroidery on knitwork can involve knitting a new piece to be embroidered, but it can also be interesting to give a new look to existing clothing – perhaps to a piece that has seen better days. Even commercially produced sweaters, hats and mittens can be embellished with a needle and yarn. It can also be fun to try out embroidering on different materials, including unconventional ones. If you wish to embroider knitted garments you can cover the whole item with stitches, or let a few strategically placed details work as a decoration. If there is a hole in the garment you can cover it with embroidery. Using the explanatory drawings in the book, you can renew and alter exactly as you wish. Any knitted item can be enhanced, and if you tire of the embroidery you can simply unstitch it! Almost three hundred beautiful stitched items are shown, all displaying amazingly different effects that can be achieved on knitting with just a needle and a length of wool. Flanagan, Mark, - Book

17/01/2020 Note: What could be more quintessentially British than a spot of afternoon tea? It’s a hallowed tradition that’s taken particularly seriously at Buckingham Palace, where for more than a decade Royal Chef Mark Flanagan and his team have prepared an afternoon tea that reflects the best of this venerable tradition across the seasons, from springtime picnics to sophisticated summer garden parties and festive Christmas teas. Royal Teas, the follow-up to A Royal Cookbook, shares Flanagan’s recipes for a variety of tantalizing tea-time treats, including sweet and savory pastries, cookies, and show-stopping cakes. Each recipe is reproduced with clear instructions and a table to convert measurements to the ones you are most familiar with and is accompanied by beautiful photographs of the tableware, floral arrangements, and other decorative items that adorn the royal table throughout the year. Organized by season, the book is also a testament to the Royal Kitchens’ commitment to sourcing fresh, local ingredients, from the mulberry trees in the Palace Gardens, whose berries are harvested and made into deliciously syrupy jam, to the beehives that provide the year-round honey used in honey sponge cake. The first official tea-time cookbook from the Royal Collection, Royal Tea invites readers to take a break in the day to indulge in a Royal Family–tested sweet treat—well-behaved corgis welcome! About the Author Mark Flanagan is Royal Chef at Buckingham Palace. Suggested for: Northam Managed by: Colbourne , Kim Status: Available in the library

Blaikie, Thomas, - Large print

17/01/2020 Note: Cover says "Royal Anecdotes" About thirty years ago the Guardian first published two amusing anecdotes about the Queen Mother. Readers reeled to see stories actually printed in a national newspaper that until then had had only an underground existence in certain circles. After that, tales about the royal family became respectable; they were also, quite rightly, believed to be true. Taken as a whole they reflect the contradictory roles we like royalty to fulfil: unworldly and impossibly regal, engagingly domesticated and just like us, or camp, worldly and outrageous. In this affectionate tribute Thomas Blaikie has gathered together a compendium of stories, many never published before, which provide access to a unique world. How exactly a Queen reacts when she finds her footmen draped in her jewels? What does she do to amuse herself as she whiles away the hours sitting for her portrait? And how did the Duchess of Windsor and the Queen Mother really get on? This beautifully illustrated book answers these questions and poses many more in its affectionate celebration of the diverse personalities of the House of Windsor. Hancock Publlishing, - Book

29/01/2020 Note: Things We Love features the charming stories and authentic recipes from outback Australians and those working in the agricultural industry. It speaks to a culture of cattlemen and women who take pride in working as a team, sharing food and celebrating the wealth and history of knowledge enmeshed in their own unique regions of Australia. This book richly captures the spirit of these pioneering men and women’s lives and those that work on the land today. Their love for the country and cattle can only be likened to a devotion they remain dedicated to. To see their cattle with fresh water and ‘belly deep’ feed is the cattlemen’s sweetest of dreams. Alongside them with utmost loyalty are their families, ringers, jillaroos, boreman, grader drivers, mechanics, horsemen and of course beloved station cooks. As the seasons roll on, recipes are passed forward and shared among friends, family and all generations so all can come together to share and enjoy. These stories and recipes are shared in this remarkable book. Along with many photos from those that have made the Hancock and Kidman stations and farms their home. Molloy, Des, - Book

30/01/2020 Note: An outrageous sortie on a pre-war BSA and two obscure, obsolete Yorkshire-made, single-cylinder Panther motorbikes. Poorly funded, with little planning, the ride depends on good luck, blind loyalty and terminal optimism. The struggle is managed with a youthful naivety. This is a recollection of a youth well-spent. Love and adventure are in the air with every chapter a precarious adventure. Suggested for: Northam Managed by: Colbourne , Kim Status: Available in the library

Simpson, Kate, - Book

18/03/2020 Note: The true story of Anzac girl Sister Alice Ross-King, who sailed to war in December 1914 and became the most decorated woman in Australia. She served four long years and was brave, humble and endlessly compassionate. About the Authors Kate Simpson is a picture book author, podcast host and incurable bookworm. She loves books about girls who march to the beat of their own drum and about women who change the world. She is the great-granddaughter of Alice Ross-King. Jess Racklyeft is the acclaimed creator of cards, picture books, original paintings, prints and all types of different illustrated projects. She worked in publishing sales for many years, but now works full-time as an artist and illustrator. Recent awards include the CBCA Notable for Picture Book of the Year two years running. 31/07/2020 Note: In the theatre of war there can only be one victor . . . August 25, 1689 The English army has surrounded Carrickfergus in Ireland. The brilliant strategist and gunner Captain Holcroft Blood of the Royal Artillery is ready to train his powerful cannon on the rebellious Catholics. But this is more than war for Blood, there is a terrible vengeance that burns in his heart. July 1, 1690 The Battle of the Boyne must be decisive for King William's English forces if he is to prevail over deposed King James's rebel Irish and French army. And Holcroft Blood is determined to destroy the man who obsesses him: the ruthless French spymaster who murdered an innocent woman he loved dearly. As battle commences and the wild Irish brigand Michael 'Galloping' Hogan wreaks havoc on the English, Blood's military tactics prove highly effective, until ambush leaves him staring at a hangman's noose. In 2014, Cosgrove became Australia's Governor-General. As Governor- General he travelled far and wide, supporting Australians in times of crisis, sadness, joy or celebration, representing us on the world stage with humour, intelligence and a force of personal magnetism that was felt by everyone from prime ministers to presidents. When he retired in July 2019, it was as one of the most beloved and respected governors-general in Australia's history. Cosgrove represents the traits we truly value: warmth, humanity, toughness and loyalty. His humour and empathy shone through the pomp and ceremony, and his time as Governor-General will be remembered as much for his laughter as for the usual dignities of the office. And every step of his journey has been accompanied by his wife Lynne—very much a part of his story. You Shouldn't Have Joined . . . is the memoir of Cosgrove's extraordinarily full and eventful life, written with intelligence, forthrightness, compassion, and a brilliant eye for a telling anecdote. Moffitt, Harry, - Book

19/08/2020 Note: Anthony 'Harry' Moffitt spent more than 20 years in the SAS. His decades of service and his multiple tours in East Timor, Iraq and Afghanistan made him one of the regiment's most experienced and respected figures. Alongside the SAS, Harry's other lifetime love is cricket. An improvised game of backyard cricket was often the circuit-breaker Harry and his team needed after the tension of operations. Recognizing the effect of the game on his fellow soldiers, he began a tradition of organising games and matches wherever he was sent, whether it was in the mountains of East Timor with a fugitive rebel leader, or on the dusty streets of Baghdad, or in exposed Forward Operating Bases in the hills of Afghanistan. Soldiers, locals and even visiting politicians played in these spontaneous yet often bridge-building games. As part of the tradition, Harry also started to take a cricket bat with him on operational tours, eleven of them in total across his career. They'd travel with him, often go outside the wire with him, and end up signed by those he met or fought alongside. These eleven bats have formed the basis for Harry's extraordinary memoir. It's a book about combat, and what it takes to serve in one of the world's most elite formations. It's a book about the toll that war takes on soldiers and their loved ones. And it's a book about the healing power of cricket, and how a game can cross boundaries and break down borders even in the most desperate of circumstances.
