Martina knows that Sir Hugh Faversham adores her. She's uncertain how she feels about him, but she knows she can always turn to him for help. So when Martina's friend Harriet begs her for help to avoid a forced marriage, Martina goes straight to Sir Hugh with a plan. She proposes that the two of them should "marry," with Harriet taking her place at the altar at the last minute. Nobody would be sure of who was married to who, and they would all escape on Sir Hugh's yacht and sort everything out later. Sir Hugh tears his hair at Martina's absurd idea, but he cannot let his darling take such risks alone. Against his better judgment, he plunges into the maddest scheme he could possibly imagine.At the last minute, they are joined on the yacht by Robin, a young friend of Sir Hugh's, who is immediately attracted to Harriet. While they're falling in love, Martina comes to know Sir Hugh better and begins to understand her own heart as well. But then, just when she discovers that he is the man she loves, a stupid mistake could leave him married to Harriet after all.
