Ex-army corporal Harry Palmer (Michael Caine) is given the option to serve as a British spy rather than spend time in prison. He is sent to Berlin to extricate a Russian general who wants to defect, but arranges his own escape plan, involving a fake funeral. The plan goes awry, but he meets some beautiful women.
