Théophile Bérengier, who was born around 1827, was a monk of Solesmes, the Benedictine monastery near Le Mans in north-western France. In 1868, he met Bishop Salvado, who was on his second European tour raising funds and seeking recruits for New Norcia. In 1879, Bérengier published his Histoire. Th is is the fi rst modern translation of Bérengier’s book and is an important contribution to our understanding of the history of the New Norcia mission and of the Catholic Church in Australia.
